According to Reuters, Russian Internet group VK launched a homemade app store on Wednesday. The company is hoping that this new store will replace all the Western alternatives. Recall that popular stores like Google Place Store and Apple App Store are no longer active in Russia. VK, often referred to as “Russia’s Facebook,” has launched a beta version of its app store called RuStore. This store will be available to Android users starting Wednesday.
“Building a Russian ap store is essential considering the current market conditions,” said Maksut Shadaev, minister of communications and media, announcing the launch.
According to VK, more than 100 apps were available on the RuStore at launch, including various government services. And more apps are joining every day.
“We are analyzing the history with the possibility of entering the iPhone market, but for now, Android is a priority for us precisely because of its architecture”– said Mr. Kiriyenko during a speech at the Big Change festival. He also added that the task of developing the RuStore platform was to ensure that each user had a choice and the opportunity to use “the widest possible palette of applications”.
The creation of RuStore is supported by Russia’s Ministry of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media. It also has the support of Russian technology company Yandex (YNDX.O). Furthermore, the country’s largest lender Sberbank (SBER.MM) and cybersecurity firm Kaspersky Lab also supports RuStore.
After launching RuMarket and NashStore, both last month, RuStore is the third Russian catalog for android phones. Online reports suggest that despite its unassuming moniker, it seems better than everything else available. Though it is not anywhere close to Google Play, it seems like a decent app store with an easy-to-use design with standard apps.
